Main purpose of job:

The British High Commission’s Political Adviser is a key role in the Political and Bilateral Affairs (PBA) team, working directly with the Senior Political Adviser and with British diplomats including the British High Commissioner.  The main responsibility of the Political Adviser is to track and report on important political developments. These include but are not limited to: proceedings of Parliament (when in session); elections across Indian states and at national level; events and developments within Indian political parties and society. Our Political Adviser’s challenge is to think and explore how these developments might impact on UK interests in India, and how we might respond – to maximise opportunities and reduce any risks.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

Regular written reporting and updates on important political developments and their impact on UK interests (30%) -- The areas covered would include regular reporting on Indian Parliament proceedings, elections, political parties and important political and wider important events in society.

Targeted research including data analysis to deliver in-depth reporting (10%) -- facilitate the PBA team’s reporting on a range of thematic pieces.

Support members of the political department on visits (20%) -- programme preparation, appointments and logistics, secure meetings and help with the delivery of events, including political conferences.

Undertake regular contact building (20%) – Networking with a range of Indian politicians, young leaders and bureaucrats to support your own work and of others. Identifying useful contacts for teams across the High Commission, expanding our network and reach.

Prepare, maintain and update political background materials, such as briefs (20%) -- Stakeholder management of important contacts is a crucial part of the job. 

Salary - INR 75,359 per month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation
